Allow me to add another to the list: amateur drifters and go kart tracks.
After receiving an invitation to attend a private drifting day hosted by a friend, I quickly set about planning a full day of photography coverage at The Grand Motor Circuit in Apple, Valley California.
Knowing essentially nothing about drifting and even less about how to document, I found myself with free range of a tightly laid out go kart track amidst sliding drift missiles. By the end of the day, I myself became a source of entertainment. Six and half feet of limbs hanging from a sliding NA Miata, while attempting to hold a DSLR, will give people the impression you're new to this whole "event coverage" gig.
Historic motorsports met Georgian countryside at Road Atlanta. Datsun, the featured marque at this year’s Mitty, fans and racing teams attended en masse, resulting in the largest ever Mitty gathering.
With track-side mechanical issues abounding, many crews made herculean efforts to keep these vintage racecars on the tarmac. A race weekend true to its roots, this even will be hard to match in Monterey this August — where Datsun will be the featured marque at the Rolex Reunion.
